The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
