The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
