Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently research predicted his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the account of a mighty king emerging; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for others, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your coat you must offer them your pullover as well.
The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ in biblical accounts requests a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has served as great solace to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended through connection to that which renders it unique and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative regarding America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both humility and conviction, a mixture that committed American Christians should embrace.
